ABOUT US

Omega Phi Alpha was founded right here at Bowling Green State University in 1967. A group of ladies on campus wanted more service opportunities and with the help of the Zeta Kappa chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, we were founded. In the 52 years since our founding we have upheld our cardinal principles of friendship, leadership and service. We currently have 31 active chapters on campuses all across the nation, all dedicated to these principles and bonded through sisterhood. We are a dry sorority and do not associate our organization with alcohol, this is in honor of our second National President, Susan Terzian, who passed away in a car accident caused by a drunk driver. Our chapter, the Alpha Chapter, is still very active on Bowling Green State University's campus and we continue to grow each semester. We currently have about 50 active members who all strive to better their community.

For any more information about Omega Phi Alpha on a national or local level, please feel free to contact the 2018-2019 Alpha Chapter President, Kathryn Smith at skathry@bgsu.edu

We are a member of the Multicultural Greek Council here at BGSU. This council consists of five chapters in the Greek community. If you would like more information about our council you can find that here:

FRIENDSHIP

Like any sorority or fraternity sisterhood is very important to our chapter. We try to promote sisterhood through out the chapter and ensure that all  our sisters get to know each other on a personal level. To promote this we have sisterhood events every month. During these events we do fun things to build new friendships and spend quality time with one another. We also hold a semi-formal during the Fall semester and a formal during the Spring, both of which are fun events that give our sisters a time for fun and memories with one another. As another way to build friendship we partake in a sober sister event once a semester where we stay sober together for 24 hours to honor the memory of our second national president, Susan Terzian, who passed away due to a drunk driver. We are constantly looking for ways to increase our bonds of friendship and sisterhood as they are important for a strong chapter.

LEADERSHIP

Our chapter strongly promotes leadership with in the greek community, university community, and the sisters personal lives. We promote leadership workshops on campus as well as hosting one leadership development opportunity each month. Our university offers many wonderful opportunities for students to learn new leaderships skills and we encourage our sisters to take advantage of these opportunities.  We aim to help our sisters grow as leaders, both within our chapter and in other areas on campus. There are many opportunities for sisters to become leaders within our chapter including being a member of our executive board, holding an executive council position, being on the Chapter Standards Board, or being on one of our many committees. Our focus on leadership is meant to not only better our sorority but also to help the sisters in their futures.

SERVICE

Omega Phi Alpha is a National Service Sorority and our main focus is serving others. We focus on four main areas of service: service to the university community, the community at large, the members of the sorority, and the nations of the world. Every semester the Alpha Chapter completes more than 1,000 hours of service. Each member is required to complete 25 hours,and many of our sisters far exceed that number. Serving others is a big influence in the recruitment of our new members as we strive to find women who have the same love for serving others as our current and past sisters do. Our service projects vary each semester as every new service directors brings their own personal touch to the role and finds new ways for us to serve. Some events we partake in every year include Relay for Life, Dance Marathon, collecting donations for the Cocoon Shelter, and volunteering our time with Woodlane Residential Services. All of our projects fit into one of our main areas of service and we also complete projects that relate to our President's projects. Our permanent President Project is mental health, and the President's project for the 2018-2019 year is Building Bridges. Through service we strengthen our bonds of friendship and sisterhood and it helps us to grow and become better leaders and citizens in the community.
